What Hole Saw Do I Need to Install a Docking Drawer Stainless Steel Capped Canisters?

Getting a clean, secure canister install starts with the right hole saw. The size you need depends on whether or not you’re using a silicone canister band. Here’s exactly what to use, and where to find it.

Understanding the Two Installation Methods

  • Without a silicone band: cut a hole equal to the canister size. The canister drops in from below with the cap removed, then the cap is secured from underneath. Underside access is required.
  • With a silicone band: cut a hole .25” larger than the canister size. The band creates a friction fit, so the canister drops in cap-on from the top. No underside access needed. This is the recommended method for cabinet shops and production environments.

Milwaukee makes excellent bi-metal hole saws for this application. They cut cleanly through wood, plywood, and MDF — exactly what you're working with in a drawer or vanity build.

Individual pricing ranges from approximately $12–$35 depending on size. Milwaukee runs slightly higher per unit but backs every saw with their industry-only Lifetime Tooth Break Warranty. Available at milwaukeetool.com, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Amazon.

What About Kits?

Milwaukee offers a range of Hole Dozer kits, but none are configured for canister installation work. The General Purpose 13-piece kit (49-22-4025) tops out at 2½” — well short of the 3", 4", and 5" sizes you’ll need. We recommend purchasing the specific sizes individually.

Pro Tips for a Clean Install

  • Always use a standard rotary drill. Never use hammer or impact mode with hole saws.
  • For finished surfaces, apply painter’s tape over the cut area to prevent tear-out.
  • Both brands use a standard 5/8"-18 arbor thread, so any universal mandrel will work.
  • For high-volume shop environments, the band installation method is best practice — it eliminates the need for underside access and delivers the cleanest, most consistent result across a full build.
