For most people, furniture is something to sit on and cabinets are for storing things in. Ciuffo Cabinetry knows better. For over 100 years, they've operated on the principle that your home is a work of art. They've become a one of New York's premier kitchen cabinet design and build firms by combining old world techniques with modern technology to create beautiful, functional spaces.
We recently sat down with Gary Ciuffo, President at Ciuffo Cabinetry, to chat about his business, his clients, and the future of design.
Firstly, your work is absolutely gorgeous. Looking at the photos of the work you've done though, every space seems so unique to the client's personality and needs. So where do you start?
Well thank you! A lot of our clients come to us with strong opinions, even if it's just opinions of what they do and don't like. Sometimes they'll have a very clear idea of what they want it to look like. But more often than not, we'll give them some homework to do before we even discuss their kitchen. We show them A LOT of photos and individual materials, so we can flush out what they do and don't like.
It's not just about creating a vision board or pinning a few photos on Pinterest though. We want to know want they want to see, feel, touch - we really grasp what they like - because if you're not detailed from the start, you can't deliver great results that they love. Finishes, paints, woods, leather, stones - we put endless materials in front of them that when combined provide a timeless look that is perfect for them.
How do you ensure it's not just a beautiful room but also serves a purpose?
That's a good point. Not only should a room look good, it should be functional and practical. But most importantly it should be safe. Safety is the base of the design, then we practically ensure the design covers all the client's needs, and only then do we add the beauty and materials.
One of the first questions we ask when working on a kitchen is, "How do you charge your phones?" Everyone - even kids - has phones now, and no one wants a well-designed kitchen with those devices strewn all over the place. Even worse is when all of the family's phones and tablets are piled up in one place right in the middle of the kitchen counter. We recommend Docking Drawer for charging and powering devices out of sight, and we also want to stop a homeowner from rigging up something unsafely.
What can we look forward to from Ciuffo in 2018 and beyond?
We're constantly adding new options, materials, features and technology to our designs. But we've been around for over 100 years, so you can also expect more of the same. We're always going to help our clients build the kitchen of their dreams. And we're always going to put quality, service and timeless design at the heart of our work.
A huge thanks to Gary Ciuffo and everyone at Ciuffo Cabinetry for sharing their expertise and experience! Visit their website for even more photos of their gorgeous work and to get in touch if you're looking to build the kitchen of your dreams.
