Our Favorite Hair Dryers For Curly Hair

"Your hair is so beautiful! I wish my hair looked like that!" This is a phrase heard often by the curly-haired people in our Docking Drawer offices. While it's supposed to be a compliment the truth is that people have NO IDEA just how much work goes into maintaining curly hair. We know, we know—cue the tiny violin, right?

Hair dryers used on curly hair and hair dryers used on more straight or wavy hair tend to differ. Between all the curly-haired folks in our office we've definitely tried them all. Because of this we had the thought: why should our customers go through the struggle of this when we can just spread the news about what actually works? Sure all curly hair is different, but here are some of the best curly hair hair dryers in today's market.

DysonThe Dyson Supersonic™

Dyson is probably the priciest hair dryer out on today's market. It's certainly the most expensive on today's list. Turns out, that's for a reason. This hair dryer works fast—we're talking ninja-like speed. Its unique setting allow users to control the air and heat settings which is a huge help for the curly heads out there. Most surprising was just how frizz free our curls were. Again, there's a lot that goes into this—style gel, towel material, patience—but our hair has never been quite so smooth and shiny unless we're just leaving the salon.

The Remington D3190A

We purchased this little baby at our local Target for about $20 and we were pretty pleased. Apparently, this hair dryer brags of micro conditioners which go into your hair when this dryer is switched to "on." We're not sure if that's true, but it does have a ceramic coated-grill and as all curly haired people know—ceramic = good. This dryer has separate speeds for your fan and heat so the type of curly hair you have should be able to find a setting that will work for you. A diffuser is included—the curly-haired person's best friend. Our favorite part of this dryer was that it had a removeable filter so we could clean it pretty easily after uses.

The Wazor Pro

This is a pretty nice hair dryer for all your curly people out there. It's about $50 but you can purchase it at a local drug store. We actually found ours at Walmart—don't judge us, those roll back prices seriously can't be beat. This dryer comes will all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a higher-end hair dryer including heat (3) and speed (2) settings. While we found that it did dry our hair pretty quickly, the result was a bit frizzier than we would have liked. Not so much frizz that we wouldn't use it again, but maybe we'd try it in combination with some other styling products and lower settings. One thing we did notice was how soft our hair felt afterward, probably due to the "100 times more ions" this dryer claims in comparison to other hair dryers in its class.

Be Purchase Smart

Are you going to purchase a new hair dryer to help you tame all those curls? Maybe you know this and maybe you don't, but there are a few things every curly-haired person should know before they drop their dollars on a new hair dryer.

Heating Materials

Are you going to use ceramic, metal, or plastic? When it comes to curly hair you'll get the best results from a hair dryer that is ceramic (or ceramic coated as the case might be). They have a tendency to be better at heat distribution, ensuring your ends don't get fried and your final result is less frizzy. Boom.

Added Accessories

Curly-haired people know that a regular old hair dryer tip doesn't work. It just makes you look like a chia pet. Or a poodle. Before you purchase your next hair dryer for your fabulous curls, be sure to double check the contents of the box. A diffuser is a must for curly hair. If your hair dryer didn't (or doesn't) come with one, you can pick one up separately at your local drug store.

Wattage

How long do you want to take to dry your hair? That's the question you need to ask yourself. Some curly hair will do better when dried slowly. Other curly hair can take the high power and not turn into a huge nightmare. Low wattage dryers will take longer to dry your hair and are usually used be the everyman. Meanwhile those high wattage dryers you can find at your local salon is usually being used so they can get more people in and out their door.

Don't forget that whether you invested in a high-quality hair dryer like the the Dyson Supersonic™  or something from your local drug store, adding a Style Drawer Power Outlet to your styling drawer can help you stay organized, plugged in and powered up!
